WWW Wednesday #11

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words

WWW stands for three questions:

What are you currently reading?

The first Percy Jackson book and the Red Queen are still ongoing projects but I've started an urban fantasy this week as well:

(The Tarot Sequence #1)
by K. D. Edwards

Synopsis:

Rune Saint John, last child of the fallen Sun Court, is hired to search for Lady Judgment's missing son, Addam, on New Atlantis, the island city where the Atlanteans moved after ordinary humans destroyed their original home.

With his companion and bodyguard, Brand, he questions Addam's relatives and business contacts through the highest ranks of the nobles of New Atlantis. But as they investigate, they uncover more than a missing man: a legendary creature connected to the secret of the massacre of Rune's Court. In looking for Addam, can Rune find the truth behind his family's death and the torments of his past?

This book is hilariously funny so far, the banter between the two main characters is priceless!

Synopsis:

Grace Lafferty only feels alive when she's dangling 500 feet above ground. As a post-World War I wing walker, Grace is determined to get to the World Aviation Expo, proving her team’s worth against flashier competitors and earning a coveted Hollywood contract.

No one’s ever questioned Grace’s ambition until Henry Patton, a mechanic with plenty of scars from the battlefield, joins her barnstorming team. With each new death-defying trick, Henry pushes Grace to consider her reasons for being a daredevil. Annoyed with Henry’s constant interference, and her growing attraction to him, Grace continues to test the powers of the sky.

After one of her risky maneuvers saves a pilot’s life, a Hollywood studio offers Grace a chance to perform at the Expo. She jumps at the opportunity to secure her future. But when a stunt goes wrong, Grace must decide whether Henry, and her life, are worth risking for one final trick.

I've read some great reviews about this novel, I'm ready to give it a try and see how I like it.

Welcome to this week's WWW Wednesday!

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words

WWW stands for three questions:

What are you currently reading?

I'm reading four books simultaneously at the moment. Unfortunately we made very slow progress with Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief last week. We could finish the book in, like, two chunks (we are on page 223 out of 353) if only we found some free time to read together. My brother has a lot of tasks to do for school. Ah well, we'll make it soon!

I'm participating in Hope, Faith & Books's Red Queen read-along. I'm glad to report I'm on track so far. You'll get an update about this one tomorrow.

You've seen this title on my blog before.
I'm planning to finish it today. My review is coming on Sunday.

(How to Hang a Witch #1)
by Adriana Mather

Synopsis:

Salem, Massachusetts is the site of the infamous witch trials and the new home of Samantha Mather. Recently transplanted from New York City, Sam and her stepmother are not exactly welcomed with open arms. Sam is the descendant of Cotton Mather, one of the men responsible for those trials and almost immediately, she becomes the enemy of a group of girls who call themselves The Descendants. And guess who their ancestors were?

If dealing with that weren't enough, Sam also comes face to face with a real live (well technically dead) ghost. A handsome, angry ghost who wants Sam to stop touching his stuff. But soon Sam discovers she is at the center of a centuries old curse affecting anyone with ties to the trials. Sam must come to terms with the ghost and find a way to work with the Descendants to stop a deadly cycle that has been going on since the first accused witch was hanged. If any town should have learned its lesson, it's Salem. But history may be about to repeat itself.

I'm hooked on the Salem subject at the moment thanks to NBC's Timeless. I just needed a matching read while waiting for the episode, haha. I might review the book and the Timeless episode together, we'll see.

WWW Wednesday #8

Hey Friends! What a lovely Wednesday we have awoken to!
I hope you're all having a wonderful day!

As you've probably noticed, I have a brand new banner up for which I added a fitting button too (see on the sidebar). My rating system changed as well, check out the delicious pinapples I'll use from now on under the 'Review Policy' option above!

With the banner the blog's whole theme changed, from angelic to Caribbean bliss I know, but I felt I needed to rethink the paradisian concept a little bit – we all need changes from time to time.

How do you like it? Do you prefer the new banner or should I change back to the old one? Your opinion matters!!

What am I up to these days reading-wise? My regular WWW post will answer this question:

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words

WWW stands for three questions:

What are you currently reading?

It's unlike me, but I'm currently reading three books at the same time.

by Anita Diamant

As I mentioned before this is a biblical story told from the perspective of Dinah, daughter of Jacob. In the Bible she was raped and her brothers slaughtered a whole town to avange her tainted virtue. I have a feeling there will be a twist in this book compared to the original story, but I'm still in the beginning. We'll see... I love how the author describes the life of the women's community, there is a very strong bond between the females in this novel.
(Percy Jackson and the Olympians #1)
by Rick Riordan

I'm reading this with my little brother (I purchased the book for his 10th birthday). He reads a few pages aloud, then I read a few. We did this before, with the Harry Potter series. He usually doesn't sit down with a book alone but he enjoys reading like this a lot. I love it too because it means I can spend quality time with him. He is a sweetheart.

(Sex and Sweet Tea #1)
by Juliette Poe

I heard about this series on Lexxie's blog, Unconventional Book Views. It consists of novellas that are set in Whynot, a small town in South Carolina. This first instalment follows Trixie and Ryland, two people who were a couple in the past but broke up because they couldn't agree on where to settle down. Rylan comes to visit Trixie to help her out with a legal case. I suspect soon the southern sunshine won't be the only thing that turns the air hot in Whynot.

Since I was asked to join the blog tour of Song of Blood & Stone, my review will arrive closer to the publication date. All I'll say now is that it was a great adventure!

What do you think you'll read next?

I'll leave this blank here for now. I'll let my mood dictate when the time comes.

WWW Wednesday #7

And if it's Wednesday, it's WWW day.

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words

WWW stands for three questions:

What are you currently reading?

(Earthsinger Chronicles #1)
by L. Penelope

Synopsis:

Orphaned and alone, Jasminda lives in a land where cold whispers of invasion and war linger on the wind. Jasminda herself is an outcast in her homeland of Elsira, where her gift of Earthsong is feared. When ruthless soldiers seek refuge in her isolated cabin, they bring with them a captive--an injured spy who threatens to steal her heart.

Jack's mission behind enemy lines to prove that the Mantle between Elsira and Lagrimar is about to fall nearly cost him his life, but he is saved by the healing Song of a mysterious young woman. Now he must do whatever it takes to save Elsira and its people from the True Father and he needs Jasminda's Earthsong to do it. They escape their vicious captors and together embark on a perilous journey to save Elsira and to uncover the secrets of The Queen Who Sleeps.

Thrust into a hostile society, Jasminda and Jack must rely on one another even as secrets jeopardize their bond. As an ancient evil gains power, Jasminda races to unlock a mystery that promises salvation.

The fates of two nations hang in thebalance as Jasminda and Jack must choose between love and duty to fulfill their destinies and end the war.

I received this book via NetGalley. So far my favourite thing about it is that every chapter starts with a little excerpt from a folktale. I believe it was a wonderful idea from the author.

Sawbones
(Sawbones #1)
by Melissa Lenhardt

My review will be up in a few days!

What do you think you'll read next?

The Red Tent
by Anita Diamant

Synopsis:

Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that are about her father, Jacob, and his dozen sons. Told in Dinah's voice, this novel reveals the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood--the world of the red tent. It begins with the story of her mothers--Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah--the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that sustain her through a hard-working youth, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah's story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate connection with the past. Deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling with a valuable achievement in modern fiction: a new view of biblical women's society.

A Bible story told through the eyes of a woman – I think I'm in for a treat. The book has a very high rating on Goodreads too so I have high expectations.

WWW stands for three questions:

What are you currently reading?

by Melissa Lenhardt

Synopsis:

Outlander meets post-Civil War unrest in this fast-paced historical debut.

When Dr. Catherine Bennett is wrongfully accused of murder, she knows her fate likely lies with a noose unless she can disappear. Fleeing with a bounty on her head, she escapes with her maid to the uncharted territories of Colorado to build a new life with a new name. Although the story of the murderess in New York is common gossip, Catherine's false identity serves her well as she fills in as a temporary army doctor. But in a land unknown, so large and yet so small, a female doctor can only hide for so long.

I'll be honest: I'm having a hard time getting into this one, but I've only read 10%, which is not much. Anything can happen later, I won't give up on it just yet.

WWW stands for three questions:

1. What are you currently reading?

by Khaled Hosseini

Synopsis:

The Kite Runner is an unforgettable story of honour, courage and betrayal set in war-torn Afghanistan as two small boys test their friendship to its limits. Compelling, heartrending, and etched with details of a history never before told in fiction, The Kite Runner explores the ways in which we’re damned by our moral failures, and of the extravagant cost of redemption.

I've been planning to read this book for ages, the time has finally come. I have plenty of tissues at hand, don't worry.

Synopsis:

Wrongfully accused of murder, Dr. Catherine Bennett is destined to hang... unless she can disappear.

With the untamed territory of Colorado as her most likely refuge, she packs her physician's kit and heads West. But even with a new life and name, a female doctor with a bounty on her head can hide for only so long.

Western, anyone? I'm in the mood for a desert setting after finishing a pirate story. To keep the balance, ya know :)

WWW stands for three questions:

1. What are you currently reading?
by Jude Morgan

Synopsis:

From an obscure country parsonage came the most extraordinary family of the nineteenth century. The Brontë sisters created a world in which we still live - the intense, passionate world of JANE EYRE and WUTHERING HEIGHTS; and the phenomenon of this strange explosion of genius remains as baffling now as it was to their Victorian contemporaries. In this panoramic novel we see with new insight the members of a uniquely close-knit family whose tight bonds are the instruments of both triumph and tragedy. Emily, the solitary who turns from the world to the greater temptations of the imagination: Anne, gentle and loyal, under whose quietude lies the harshest perception of the stifling life forced upon her: Branwell, the mercurial and self-destructive brother, meant to be king, unable to be a prince: and the brilliant, uncompromising, tormented Charlotte, longing for both love and independence, who establishes the family's name and learns its price.

I've always wanted to read a book about the Brontë sisters, this is it.

2. What did you recently finish reading?

I've finished To Kill a Mockingbird, the review is coming tomorrow!

 Synopsis:

After fleeing her home in Tharien with the Emperor's forces hot on her heels, Aia Wynnald has only one goal: To end the two-thousand-year-old discrimination against Benders—a race of beings like her, with a misunderstood gift. But when the Emperor’s Church of Mighty retaliates with a new threat, her noble plans are put on hold.

With her companion Cole Balain, a former enemy, by her side, Aia must halt the devastation triggered by her well-meaning actions. The only way she can fight the Church is with the help of a disenchanted group of rebel Benders who'd sooner submit to their fate than follow Aia's lead.

Can she inspire them to fight and work together to resolve this new crisis, or will her ingrained submissive nature bring her, and the Benders of Dyel, to their knees?

I read the first book in the series and loved it very much. Can't wait to dive into the second instalment.

WWW stands for three questions:

1. What are you currently reading?
by Harper Lee

Synopsis:

Atticus Finch gives this advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of this classic novel - a black man charged with attacking a white girl. Through the eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Lee explores the issues of race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s with compassion and humour. She also creates one of the great heroes of literature in their father, whose lone struggle for justice pricks the conscience of a town steeped in prejudice and hypocrisy.

This is a re-read for me. After doing The Zombie Apocalypse Book Tag (where I got Atticus as the team medic) I felt like rewatching the movie and once I did, the book called for me again from my shelf. It's high time for me to review it anyway, since I didn't write anything about it the first time around.

2. What did you recently finish reading?
by Lecia Cornwall

Synopsis:

Laire MacLeod’s father has married a mysterious widow who is a vain beauty that deals with potions and spells. Laire does not drink them with the rest of her family and is the only one who could see through her stepmother’s games. When Laire flees to find help from her Uncle the Lady’s huntsman follows her with orders to kill. Laire must survive in a dangerous new city and find the antidote to a poisonous potion before it is too late.

Iain Lindsay is cursed. He is bound for seven years to be the hunter of a Lady who uses him to bring back birds to use in her potions. When Laire MacLeod escapes the Lady’s nets, Iain tracks her to Edinburgh, where she’s found shelter with an unusual band of thieves, but he cannot bring himself to harm her. Instead, he finds himself falling in love with the MacLeod beauty.
But a Highlander’s oath is his bond, and the price for helping her is death, both his own, and of those he loves.

And I loved it! But hey, guys, the cover is soooo misleading. I mean... why would you put a girl in a red cloak on the front of a Snow White retelling?? The cover shouts Little Red Riding Hood when the story is actually Snow White. Weird.

Look out for the review, it'll be up soon!

3. What do you think you'll read next?

Okay. So. As you know, I wanted to read Girl in Disguise next, but for some reason they don't send me the e-copy, even though I'm supposed to review the book by March 25. I already sent them two polite e-mails, but I don't get a reply. They are either not going to send it to me or they are going to send it in the last minute and that's not good news, since I'm not a very fast reader... Oh, well.

Since Girl in Disguise is not an option now, I'll show you what I planned to read after that:

by Jennifer Rose McMahon

Synopsis:

'When your dreams become reality, being cursed can be a real nightmare.'

Like a punch in the face, eighteen-year-old Maeve O'Malley's visions knock her off her path. The Pirate Queen stalking Maeve in her dreams, killed her mother years ago, and now is coming for her.

Maeve's decision to ditch Boston College takes everyone by surprise as she packs her bags, leaves Boston, and heads to the west coast of Ireland to chase her dreams – and end them.

Maeve uncovers an ancient family curse that refuses to remain silent until she accepts her predestined role in what many thought was only legend. Her Irish history professor – a man she shouldn't be falling for – is the only person who understands the origin of the tormenting events.

Maeve's journey becomes a medieval treasure hunt through Ireland's castles and ruins as she tracks the wrathful Pirate Queen who has her marked for vengeance...

2. What did you recently finish reading?

by Nicholas Sparks

Synopsis:

Seventeen year-old Veronica “Ronnie” Miller’s life was turned upside-down when her parents divorced and her father moved from New York City to Wilmington, North Carolina. Three years later, she remains angry and alienated from her parents, especially her father… until her mother decides it would be in everyone’s best interest if she spent the summer in Wilmington with him. Ronnie’s father, a former concert pianist and teacher, is living a quiet life in the beach town, immersed in creating a work of art that will become the centerpiece of a local church. The tale that unfolds is an unforgettable story about love in its myriad forms – first love, the love between parents and children – that demonstrates, as only a Nicholas Sparks novel can, the many ways that deeply felt relationships can break our hearts… and heal them.

The review is on the way. Unfortunately I can't say it'll be positive.

3. What do you think you'll read next?

by Greer Macallister

  Synopsis:

For the first female Pinkerton detective, respect is hard to come by. Danger, however, is not.

In the tumultuous years of the Civil War, the streets of Chicago offer a woman mostly danger and ruin-unless that woman is Kate Warne, the first female Pinkerton detective and a desperate widow with a knack for manipulation.

Descending into undercover operations, Kate is able to infiltrate the seedy side of the city in ways her fellow detectives can't. She's a seductress, an exotic foreign medium, or a rich train passenger, all depending on the day and the robber, thief, or murderer she's been assigned to nab.

Inspired by the real story of Kate Warne, this spirited novel follows the detective's rise during one of the nation's greatest times of crisis, bringing to life a fiercely independent woman whose forgotten triumphs helped sway the fate of the country.

Probably. The Girl in Disguise book tour reaches my blog on 25 March and that's not so far away now.
